Ode to the Familial Village by Katie Aliferis (Lucent Dreaming 5)

How I let you nurture and nourish

How I let you educate and eradicate

How I let you torture and torment

I let you break down my mind

and everything I thought I knew

I let you break down my body

an ancient amphora—dried and cracked—

crumbling under your granite heel of history

fragments crushed beneath the feet of Titans

Until I am nothing but dust

Blown through the ethos into the earth

where a sculptor scoops me up

works me into her clay

moulds me into a phoenix

Forged and fired

Rising anew
