I want to invent a type of suffering
my mother hasn’t had a chance to get to know.
Write something my mother wouldn’t
like or understand. One past day haunts me
still, but a future day haunts me
better. I have two names and twice as many eyes.
In the interest of doing something
interesting, I walk out of the house at midnight—
clutch a knife between pale fingers.
I take pictures of main street deserted. Sliver
of cheesy moon, white bougainvillea
blooming like starlight on dark green sky.
