Hocus Pocus by Lucy Aur (Lucent Dreaming Issue 12)

If you don’t believe in magic
let me tell you something true,
that the universe pulled itself apart
just so it could make you.
The smallest of bones
once belonged to something more,
and every breath you’ve ever breathed
has been let out before.
The parts of you that you don’t like,
from your cheekbones to your thighs,
were once held inside a shooting star
that burned up in the sky.
An astronaut may have seen the world
from his shuttle up in space,
but you can feel the milky way
on the soft parts of your face.
The freckles on your wrists
match up to the big dipper,
the hocus pocus in your head was made from something bigger.
You may not believe in magic
but don’t you think it’s strange,
that the atoms in your body
have never ever changed.
They once belonged to planets,
to cabbages and Kings,
they fell apart and came together to make many brilliant things.
So next time you feel lonely,
or the universe makes you feel small,
just remember it is a part of you
and you are part of it all.
